Outdoor Hockey

I love hockey, and there's nothing better than playing a little shinny outside on a natural ice surface. One reason for my underwhelming undergraduate scholarship was due in some part to a sheet of ice that was located right beside the Sportsplex in Brandon. There were tennis courts on the north side of the building, and every winter the staff there erected boards, threw out some nets, and used the 'Plex's Zamboni to resurface this huge ice rink. Every weekday afternoon (days that were lab-free, that is) a group of geography/geology students would head up to the rink and play for a couple of hours. The recent trend of staging outdoor NHL and college games always seems to generate a huge amount of interest, even in the United States. My header has a shot from the New Years day game between Buffalo and Pittsburg a few years ago. Here's a photo journey from the latest - a game between the University of Michigan Wolverines and their rivals Michigan State Spartans, held at Michigan's 'Big House' football stadium (capacity -110,000). Wow!
